Building a new PC-BSD System

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 By kevmille

Well, I decided to build another custom desktop in my home again. My last customized system was an AMD64 desktops which is now running as the Vietnam BSD/Linux Mirror with the Saigon Linux Group. This time around, I decided to build an Intel Core2 Duo system so I could run PC-BSD, a variant of FreeBSD, at home. I really wanted a Intel Core2 Quad or AMD64 Dual Core system but decided against it for the mean time. In about six months, I plan to build a AMD64 Quad Core server for the Saigon Linux Group.

Below are the specs of my new system:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHx Processor CPU
  • Asus Intel G35 (P5K-VM) Motherboard
  • Kingmax 1GB DDR2 Memory (Total 4 GB)
  • Gigabyte GeForce 7300GT 16X, 256DDR2, 128B Graphics Card
  • Samsung Plus SATA II 250 GB Hard Drive
  • Asus DRW-2014LIT DVD-RW
  • Creative Blaster Audigy Sound Card
  • Cooler Master Power Supply – 460W
  • Cooler Master Elite Case

At the recommendation of a friend, I purchased all of my parts at X Shop, a member of Hop Nhat Group. The customer service was excellent. They build my system in front of me. Here are some pictures of them building my new desktop:

(There’s my Asus P5K-VM motherboard with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU already attached)

(Nearly finished, these guys worked through their lunchtime)

Tonight or tomorrow, I will start to install PC-BSD on my new system. My goal is to become one of the package developers for this community.

Approximately $800, you probably get it 10 percent cheaper in the US.
