Vietnam – The Haven for Linux

Monday, January 7, 2008 By kevmille

Vietnam Professional Linux User Group (ViPLUG)

(Source: ViPLUG)

Another article passed on by Tracy, http://www.ultraviolet.org/ in regards to Linux in Vietnam.  I have been reading about the Communist Party requiring their agencies inside Vietnam to use open source software such as OpenOffice.org.  Saccombank and ACB made the switch awhile back.  I am using Linux in my classroom at the high school where I teach part-time. Only a couple complaints 🙂

I  hope Vietnam can make the transition to Linux.  The transition from MS Office to OpenOffice should be easier than say, the transition from Office 2003 to Office 2007.

Despite the government’s approval in supporting Linux and open source technology in Vietnam, this country is far from a haven for Linux.  OpenOffice may be installed on the government agency’s computers, but I am pretty sure that users are still asking their IT managers to install MS Office right beside it.  Also, do not expect Linux to make any roads with the home desktop market.  People want to go home to games, something even today Linux fails at.

Still, Linux is finally getting the support it needs in Vietnam but we still got a long ways to go.

Here is the article if you are interested in reading it:
