I have spent the last couple of days trying to get Gentoo 2008.0_beta1 installed. Each install attempt was followed by a kernel panic.
First I thought it was with GRUB but later I realized I was having SATA problems. Seems the problem is related to the new 2.6.24-gentoo-r4 kernel. I could not find the modules I needed in menuconfig to get SATA to work properly.
One Gentoo user posted his .config so I decided to copy it, edit it, and compile it on my desktop.
After about 30 minutes, I finally got Gentoo 2008.0_beta1 to boot up. I had problems getting dhcp to work since I forgot to compile the right network modules into the kernel.
Right now I am compiling xorg-x11 on my desktop. Should be working within the hour.
