In Asian history, you always hear about the two failed Mongol invasions of Japan in the late 1300s. Yet me know very little about two, also failed, Mongol invasions of Vietnam. The Mongol invasions of Japan were relatively short, literally just a couple months in total for both campaigns. This culminated with the “Kamikaze”, or “Divine Wind,” destroying both Mongol fleets. In Vietnam, the campaigns were longer and several strategic choices helped defeat the Mongols. Japan and Vietnam were the only Asian powers that defeated the Mongol armies of the time.
Kings and Generals YouTube Channel just posted their short documentary on both Mongol invasions of Vietnam. It is quite interesting that I actually want to read up more about these campaigns. Vietnamese have a long history of fighting, and defeating, bigger military powers then themselves.
