Rumor going around Saigon today is that the price of petrol will be 25,000 VND/liter within the week.
At that price, most of the people riding the old style motorbikes (Dreams and Super Cubs) may stop riding them altogether. This city could become an electric moped haven in the upcoming months.

Great!!!
Less traffic and cleaner air. See high gas prices aren`t all bad.

I heard this rumor too while on the side of the road in District 1. But I was told that the price had already gone up (on 5 Aug), but I forgot to go to Petrolimex to confirm. It would be tough for many people, but maybe more people will start taking the bus which is only 3,000 dong. I agree, the air quality could use some help here! I was really choking yesterday….cough!

@Yon: Traffic will still be there but replaced by electric bikes and bicycles.
@Jeff: Odd how the price rises were not mentioned in the English news. I will check the prices today when I am out.

Hmmmm, I did go to Petrolimex today and it was still 19,000 (not 25,000) but my friend Ti insisted it will go up soon (based on rumors). He asked the guy at the pump (who works there) but he didn’t know anything. It will be interesting to see what happens because Vietnamese are now paying more for gas on average than Americans (based on information from American Automobile Association). I hope the prices don’t go any higher, especially to 25,000 VND !! Fingers crossed (for good luck, not the other thing 🙂

Did you read my latest post? MOIT denied wanting to raise petrol prices in Vietnam. It looks like 19,000 VND/liter will stay for now. I agree with you, I feel it will be raised in the near future. One friend suggested that Vietnam will raise the prices higher and lower them to today’s levels when their oil refineries are completed in a couple years.
