Last week I visited the Berru Turkish Restaurant in District 7. It is hard to believe that it has been over two years since I last visited Berru. Mr. Cem, the owner, is a former colleague of mine from our days at the Horizon Bilingual International School. He was the head chef there.
When I arrived, I noticed that the restaurant has changed a lot since I last visited. Mr. Cem and his wife are still there. Berru is different from other restaurants in Saigon that offer Turkish cuisine. First, Berru’s food is authentic Turkish food. Second, it is the only restaurant offering Turkish food in Saigon that is halal. Mr. Cem and his wife work hard to maintain the quality of their food.
When you arrive, Mr. Cem will greet you. Now, like any Turkish cafes back in Turkey, you have two choices in ordering food from Berru. One, you can choose what you want from the menu. Second, you can let Mr. Cem choose for you. Of course, having traveled to Turkey three times, I know what I wanted. Iskander. Sadly, it is not offered on the menu this time.
Instead, I decided to choose one chicken durum (chicken wrap) and manty (small dumplings). I had a big appetite so I knew I would be able to finish the entire meal. I ate my meal with two cans of Sprite. The durum was excellent. It reminded me of the durum I had back in 2001 when I visited Istanbul with my Turkish friends. I should have ordered two durums but I am glad that I got to eat the manty that followed.
The meal ended with two baklavas, one of the best Turkish desserts. In most cases, I would have my baklava with Turkish tea but these days I tend to be sensitive to caffeine at night. The meal came to around 250,000 VND. A very good price for authentic Turkish food.
The meal was very appetizing. I had a great conversation with Mr. Cem. His sons used to work at the restaurant but they are all in Turkey now. His English as improved a lot in two years as well.
I am hoping Berru brings back Iskander. Mr. Cem said he will see if he can make it with chicken.
Berru is located in District 7 near Nha Be. Head to Parkson and then drive towards Nha Be. It will be a ride but you will have a good appetite when you arrive. Berru’s address is in Grab.
If you want good authentic Turkish food in Saigon, visit Berru Turkish Restaurant. Tell them that Kevin from SaigonNezumi sent you.
