Late Friday Night Updating FreeBSD

Saturday, March 1, 2008 By kevmille

Wow, I should never gone to class Friday. My fever returned in the afternoon so I canceled my other engagements and headed home. I ended up taking some medicine and slept most of Friday evening. Got some really good sleep too but now it is nearly 2 AM in the morning and I am quite awake.

A lone cricket is making a lot of noise downstairs. I thought it was Ally, the littlest kitten, crying on the terrace so I let her in. When I brought her downstairs, I realized it was a cricket. Crickets normally do not make it out this far from District 1.

Now I am on my custom desktop updating it to FreeBSD 7.0 which was released earlier this week. I am using the freebsdupdate(8) application to update from FreeBSD 6.3 to 7.0. Currently, I am recompiling all the ports with portmanager so they will link to the new 7.0 libraries. It should take most of the night and tomorrow morning to recompile my whole system.

Maybe I will get some more sleep tonight, maybe not. That cricket is sure loud.

And there sure ain’t much to do in Saigon at 2 or 3 am, is there? Get some sleep. Imagine how tired your gonna feel at 6am when all those Hondas fire up outside….

On Friday and Saturday nights, you tend to finish the night off by going to the Chinese restaurants around 2 AM. Some people may stay at the one or two clubs that stay open all night now, just a few.

If was not sick, I would have gone out last night. Instead, I stayed home, slept and then ended up staying awake until about 3 AM.

Interesting life you lead Kevin…. I still keep an eye on portmanager comments even though stopped development ages ago, so why this comment? Hmmm, to let you know you win the coolest portmanager user award because, well you’re an American living in Saigon! and how cool is that? pretty damn cool!!! What is your reward? Guess you’l have to settle for knowing someone actually read your blog… 🙂

@Mike: I like portmanager, much faster than portupgrade. It also reminds me of Emerge from Getnoo. I was under the impression that it was still under development. Why did development stop?

Thanks for reading my blog and the award 🙂
