Saigon Skyline during August, 2021, Covid 19 Lockdown

Expat Life Aug 12, 2021

Amazing how fast the week passes when you are in lockdown. The days go really fast. Today I needed to get some fresh air so I walked out into the balcony and climbed the stairwell to the roof. I should do this everyday. Go out and read for 30 minutes in the sun.

Morning Covid 19 Cases are higher for Saigon

First, yesterday's new Covid 19 cases in Ho Chi Minh City dropped to 3400. Good news but nobody crosses their fingers anymore. A low number of new cases is usually followed by a high number the next day. The only good news is that the number of new cases in Saigon hover around 4000. With the current social distancing measures and vaccinations, it probably will not go above 4000. Things may change when fully vaccinated people let their guard down later this year.

Saigon following Attempted Quarrantine Simulation?

Sixteen months ago, the Washington Post looked at four simulations on how to "flatten the curve" and produced 4 charts. It is interesting to notice that the current chart of new cases in HCMC look similar to the Attempted quarantine chart below.

Source: Washington Post.

Many of us were hoping for a scenerio like the Free-for-all chart below. In reality, Saigon's hospitals would not have been able to cope with the severe cases. Though there were a lot of economic damage to the city, the current social distancing campaign may have lowered the lose of life.

Any attempt at "actual" distancing in the city would have been impossible. Saigon is made up of many densely populated alleyways, neighborhoods and apartments. Look at the map via https://bando.tphcm.gov.vn/ogis/ and you can tell. The areas with many clusters are located in densely populated areas. The areas with very low cases, are not.  I live in a densely populated alleyway where all the neighbors know each other and work together. So far, no cases and many have been vaccinated already. Knock on wood.

Already 3.6 million people have gotten their first Covid 19 vaccinations. After today, it could be closer to 4 million. I have not received my vaccination appointment yet.

Saigon Skyline Photos from Co Giang Ward

Anyway, this post is longer than expected. Below are the photos of the Saigon's skyline I took today:

A picture of the center of Ho Chi Minh City from the Co Giang Ward in District 1.
Bitexco Financial Tower is harder to get a picture of now from where I live. All the new buildings are blocking the view.
Manhatten Apartment construction site is shutdown since there was one positive case over a month ago. I did hear some work this morning. I think they will start working again in a week or two.
The only finished tower at the Manhatten Apartments. This building is being used for vaccinations in the Co Giang Ward.

Stay safe. I will post when I finally get my vaccination appointment. Lets pray that the new number of cases drop by this weekend. If that happens, the city can allow restaurants and businesses to open again.
