Lockdown continues in Vietnam

Expat Life Aug 1, 2021

The news came last night. The Vietnam's Prime Minister ordered a two week extension of Directive 16.  Covid cases were rising in other parts of Vietnam. People are definitely frustrated about it but at least the government is being more proactive about handling the pandemic then before.

HCMC Positive Cases Decreasing

Some positives. Cases dropped two days in a row in Saigon. Yesterday there were roughly 4180 cases, a drop about 102 from the day before but at least there is a small drop. The curve could be flattening now. This mornings numbers were around 2000, about a 500 drop from yesterday morning. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Need to be positive.

Number of positives "seem" be dropping in Ho Chi Minh City now.

There will be a discussion on why the D variant spread so fast in Saigon. Journalists here, well they are not really journalists anymore, never explore this topic. Some areas one person has it and they are the only person. In other areas, it is a huge cluster especially in alleyways. Explore it!!!

Looking for a working ATM

I decided to head out to find a ATM this morning. I needed a Citibank ATM but unfortunately, after walking there, it was "Our of Order." This was on Pham Ngu Lao street. I headed back to Bui Vien street and an HSBC ATM that accepted my US card.

Pham Ngu Lao area

On the way back I got to see more of the Pham Ngu Lao area. It has definitely been hit hard. Below is the picture of the once popular Crazy Buffalo bar. It is one victim of covid. I wonder what establishment will replace it?

Crazy Buffalo, August 1, 2021.

Go2, same owners, is still has it's signs up. That is one positive that it may reopen in the future.

Still, Bui Vien is dead. The motorbikes are just staff maintaining their bars and restaurants. Never in my life would I have thought I could stand in the middle of Bui Vien street and take a picture. On a normal day, my phone would have been picked and I at least would have been hit by a motorbike or taxi.

Empty Bui Vien street in Saigon.
Intersection of De Tham and Bui Vien. Normally heavy traffic at this intersection.

Snob Cafe is closed too. Dodo Pizza seems to be replacing it.

Snob Cafe replaced by Dodo Pizza on Tran Hung Dao street in District 1.
Pizza Hut is not in operation as well. By the way, notice the grafitti.

Bach Hoa Xanh

My walk back down De Tham to get to Bach Hoa Xanh grocery store. There was another line but it went quite fast.

We had Xs to stand on this time at Bach Hoa Xanh.

Like a couple days before, there were limited items that I could find. No real fruits which is what I needed but I have enough vegetables at home.

Two more weeks.

Stay safe. Wear a mask.
