The last week was long but interesting. Getting groceries delivered was the highlight of the week. Unfortunately the week did not end so well. Last Friday night HCMC added another 8499 new positive Covid-19 cases which shocked the whole city. Then three and half hours later I was informed that one person tested positive for Covid-19 in this house. This made for a long weekend. I did not pop out of my room until Monday morning.
Yes, I will have to get a couple more tests
Saturday new cases were lower but still at 4104 but then the new cases started to pop up again. The local authorities stated that these cases were missed by prior tests. A narrative we are hearing more often.
Vaccinations of the city have slowed as well. People are wondering when any social distancing rules will be relaxed. The current restrictions were extended until September 15. With the new cases, it is hard to tell if that will be extended as well. The good news, those in the green zones can shop once a week at the market again. Today I was also able to get an order via GrabMart.
Our alleyway is no longer a green area
In one of my past posts, I mentioned that our alleyway was considered a green area. They have taken the sign down after a bunch of new cases emerged. Oddly enough, before the delivery guys could not enter the alleyway but now they can.
Streets are still deserted
Co Giang street is dead. I can never get used to this.
My second vaccination
After waiting 23 days, I got the call to get my second jab last Monday. That surprised because I assumed I would be "taped" into the house I was at. I took the walk (see photos) above and was hoping for a quick shot and then back home. In the end, the ordeal was about 2 hours long since I came "late". Luckily Ben from Ben Styles was there to keep company. He was getting his first jab.
Many of the people were getting their first jab. This vaccination center only offered Sinopharm. I think people finally realized it was a good vaccination. It did get tense at one point, a young woman reacted bad to the vaccine. She was taken to a bed and was sleeping by the time I left a couple hours later.
The prick hurt this time around. It felt as if the nurse put the needle in sideways. After a couple of days, the soreness went to the back of my neck and head. They said the second vaccination is always worse. I would agree to that. Headache and general "jet laggedness" as well.
Vaccine data for Vietnam
My double vaccination makes me done of the 3.4 million in Vietnam that are now fully vaccinated. Today the number is up to 3.5 million including a friend of mine. Below are the the data for Monday, the day I got my second jab:
As you can see below, HCMC is getting the majority of vaccines. The goverment hopes to get 100% of adults vaccinated by the end of September. The issue is whether there are enough vaccines. Vaccinations for children 16-18 have now been postponed.
Also, Pfizer and Moderna are rumored to have been fully used with only Pfizer on order (no longer a rumor). On Facebook users already mentioned that they were given Pfizer for their second jab even though Moderna was their first. There definitely needs to be more studies down on the efficacy of mixing mRNA vaccines. AstraZeneca is still the most widely used vaccine in Vietnam.
Effectiveness of the Chinese Inactivated Vaccines
I hate to use the word vindicated here since I have felt that the Chinese inactivated vero cell vaccines were effective. The anti-Chinese media campaign created an unnecessary distrust against the Covid-19 vaccines from China.
The study from The New England Journal of Medicine stated that Coronavac by Sinovac, was effective againts the coronavirus. Sinovac and Sinopharm both produced inactivated vaccines using vero cells. You can read the findings below:
After reading these studies, a question needs to be asked. If many countries had adopted and accepted the Chinese vaccines, could this Delta wave have been stopped? Many questions like this will be asked in the future when the pandemic finally ends.
Finally, when will this strict lockdown end? That is a question everyone is asking. If this current military lockdown ends on September 15, then I think they will continue Directive 16 for at least one more month. Restaurants can offer delivery again. Then possibly by mid-October restaurants can allow limited dining again until the city reaches herd immunity.
If Saigon can get 100% of the adult population vaccinated by Sept. 30th, the city should be able to reach herd immunity by November 30th at the latest (could be sooner if other vaccinces, besides AstraZeneca, are used with the last group of unvaccinated adults). Some form of social distancing should be kept in place until next April when the whole country reaches herd immunity.
